Bokmål is the most common written language, while Nynorsk is a written language assembled from various dialects (mostly from the west coast), by a man called Ivar Aasen. The reason it was assembled was to distance the Norwegian language from the Danish one after Norway broke free from Denmark’s rule in 1814.

Nynorsk, also known as landsmål [country language], stems from the native Norwegian dialects that evolved from Old Norse (uninfluenced by Danish), and it is therefore very different from bokmål. Developed by Ivar Aasen, nynorsk was introduced by him in 1853 as part of a nationalistic desire to have a purely Norwegian language for the country. (In Bokmål you’re only allowed to write «Å bli -> ble -> har blitt», I would never ever say «ble» or «blitt») The great thing about this for Norwegians is that they can write a Norwegian Nynorsk that’s not too far from what they actually speak in their everyday lives.
